Westfield is seeking to re-use and recycle building site materials from the Broadway site as the remediation works continue as part of its commitment to sustainability,.
Westfield will unearth the remaining concrete foundations from buildings that were previously on the site. Much of the recovered materials will not be removed from the site, but will instead be recycled as part of the preparatory works for the new shopping centre.
Neil Maclure, Development Executive at Westfield said: “The concrete we dig up will be recycled and crushed to create what we call a ‘piling stage’, for use in further preparatory works. The steel reinforcements within the concrete will also be removed and sent for recycling.
“This is a good example of how Westfield will recycle materials where possible. An additional benefit is that the number of vehicles removing material from the site, and therefore using the local road network, will be minimsed.”
