In 2009, we are continuing to support 95.8 Capital FM's Help a London Child, a grant-giving charity, which works to support thousands of young people who have experienced poverty and disadvantage, abuse, neglect, homelessness, violence or crime or have an illness or disability.
In 2008, we raised over £40,000 for Help a London Child through a series of corporate donations, events and activities including the Christmas light switch-on and the centre's Santa's Wishkingdom.
The money raised by us in 2008 has aided at least 20 grass-roots projects in London, helping young and disadvantaged people from West London. Those projects supported include Action For Blind People's Actionnaires Sports Club for visually impaired children, St. Clements and St. James Carnival Band and The Brunswick Club for Young People, which offers educational and leisure facilities for boys and girls aged 8-18.
Octavia Foundation
Along with our retailers, we have partnered with the Octavia Foundation. They have 21 local charity shops, which have supported community projects in central and West London for over 30 years. Retailers working with the Octavia Foundation have donated their end-of-line and ex-sale stock to the Foundation, with all profits funding project work to improve the lives of disadvantaged local individuals and communities.
Other Charity Involvement
As well as supporting Capital FM’s Help a London Child, we have also worked with various charities throughout the year such as Breakthrough Breast Cancer, National Poppy Day Appeal and Children in Need to help raise funds and awareness.
In June 2009, Mary Portas and Grazia, helped by many of their friends across the worlds of fashion and retail, created a new kind of second hand shop in the luxurious surroundings of the Village at Westfield London. A shop which sits at the heart of a community - A living and giving shop.
The project was proudly supported by Westfield London, donating the space for free and promoting the shop to reach a whopping fundraising figure of £200,000 for Save The Children, a charity that helps save the lives of the children in the UK and across the globe.
