Working with Westfield has enabled local children and their families to be really involved in the designs and development of Stratford City. The children have been completely engaged and are quite literally building the future of Stratford.
,
Director, Discover
Building the Future is a three-year partnership between Discover and Westfield Stratford City working to engage children and their families in the regeneration of Stratford.
Discover is the UK's first hands-on story centre focusing exclusively on creativity through projects, exhibits and activities. Each year over 60,000 children and adults participate in Discover's school workshops, family visits, outreach projects and training sessions. For many children, Discover provides their first opportunity to work creatively with professional artists.
During the last academic year children from Colegrave and Maryland Primary Schools have worked with a visual artist, photographer and film maker to explore their current surroundings and create their vision for the future.
Westfield's 'Building the Future' project gives children hands-on experience of design and environmental issues and skills in order to influence their local area and shape their future.
The project also includes the 'Young Consultants', a group of 30 children between the ages of 7-12 who participate in various projects during school holidays and at weekends. The film above - 'Children for Change' - documents the Young Consultants as they investigate design issues relating to Westfield Stratford City.
