Eugene Osei Eugene Osei, aged 20: "I wanted to get involved in the Studio East project because it was a great opportunity to work with Westfield. I also liked the brief. I liked the idea of telling the stories in three parts and I immediately visualised what they could look like. With a background in theatre and drama, I am hoping to learn about documentary filmmaking as well as gaining an insight into the world of design. This project is allowing me to work at a higher level and provides an opportunity to have my work broadcast to a wider audience. I hope the experience will inform my future career as well as build my professional networks and help to develop myself as a person." /Download

Adiyatu Sambu-Balde Adiyatu Sambu-Balde, aged 20: "I got involved in the Westfield Studio East film project because I wanted to get a sense of professional work. The opportunity has allowed me to gain experience working to a brief from a real client. So far it's been nice to meet the winners who are all serious, young, creative professionals. It is inspiring to see their creative processes and I am looking forward to seeing the final work in place at Westfield Stratford City." /Download

To celebrate East London's creative spirit, Westfield Stratford City launched Studio East, a cultural initiative aimed at supporting and nurturing young talent.  As part of this initiative, a Cultural Committee chaired by retail expert Mary Portas was formed and this incredible collective of London's most acclaimed talent and opinion formers awarded a series of four commissions to be embedded in the actual fabric of Westfield Stratford City.  The Studio East Cultural Committee shortlisted talent from East London's rich creative pool and handpicked the most visionary in the areas of art, fashion, product design and environmental innovation to be awarded a ten thousand pound commission each.  The commission winners were announced during "Studio East Dining" which took place at the Bistrotheque/Carmody Groarke pop-up restaurant on 14 June 2010.

Mentored by the Cultural Committee, the selected talent are now working directly with Westfield's internal teams to bring their commissions to life.  Critically, the talent will benefit not only from expert and commercial support, but also from an unprecedented level of exposure to industry opinion formers and over 20 million customers when Westfield Stratford City opens.

Westfield Stratford City is also working with young people aged 15-20 to create films documenting the progress of the Studio East commission winners.

The project, created in partnership with A New Direction, enables young people across five boroughs to work with the professional filmmakers Eelyn Lee Productions. They are learning key media skills such as film direction, film sound, editing and interviewing. The young participants are carrying out three stages of interviews with the Studio East winners which document the progress from award announcement and commission development through to commission installation.

The young participants include: Eugene Osei, aged 20, Adiyatu Sambu-Balde, aged 20, and Muzzammil Hashmi, aged 17.
