| January 2011 | At night, the illuminated skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and the City show just how close Stratford is to the other main business districts of London. This dramatic shot also demonstrates our promixity to two of the most iconic Olympic venues - the Main Stadium and Aquatics Centre. | /Download |
| December 2010 | Just as the last cranes are removed on site, two more return! We have just announced a second hotel will be built at Westfield Stratford City and construction commences immediately. 350 rooms will be built on top of shops and restaurants and will be open in time to welcome visitors to next year's Olympics. All around us work on the Olympic Park and Athlete's Village is also reaching a peak. | /Download |
| November 2010 | With only 3 months to go until the completion of the main works, activity on site is starting to peak. Attention is mostly focused on the inside of the buildings now, with decorators being one of the last teams to join the project. However we are still busy outdoors - there is plenty of landscaping to complete before the Christmas shutdown. Our workforce is now approaching 3,000 on site each day. | /Download |
| October 2010 | With much of the work on the main buildings nearing completion, the focus turns to our streets and squares. Thousands of square metres of granite and concrete paving will be installed over the next couple of months, followed soon after by our first trees and plants. Our off-site roadworks are now coming to an end as well, representing another major milestone completed on time for the project. | /Download |
| September 2010 | In the bottom right of this image sits our main multi-storey car park, clad in a gold coloured mesh. Elsewhere, car parks are situated on roofs and underground, meaning that the centre of Westfield Stratford City is a car-free zone. Our wide street and squares are for pedestrians only, with public art, trees, and outdoor dining areas sitting between shops and restaurants. The big news on site this month has been the successful completion of the John Lewis, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer buildings by Westfield. These have now been handed over to the retailers to begin their fit-out works. | /Download |
| August 2010 | Next month John Lewis, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer move in to begin fitting out their stores, so final inspections are now underway. Any last minute "snags" are dealt with and inspected by the Westfield team to make sure these buildings are ready. From next year more and more stores will be handed over to their tenants, though fit-out won't begin on some of the smallest stores until a few weeks before opening day. | /Download |
| July 2010 | Many buildings at Westfield Stratford City are designed to have further floors built above them at a later date. However, as more and more potential office tenants become interested in locating in Stratford, Westfield made the decision to build one office block earlier than previously expected. Here you can see the concrete "core" being constructed on top of an existing building. This core is the beginning of the structure for a 6-storey, 120,000 square foot high specification office to rival the best that the City and Canary Wharf have to offer. | /Download |
| June 2010 | The white structure on top of the multi-storey car park to the bottom left of this picture is a temporary rooftop pavilion created to launch Westfield's Studio East initiative. Studio East aims to support and nurture young talent through real commissions at Westfield Stratford City which will be unveiled when the centre opens in September 2011. The Studio East Pavilion was designed by young architects Carmody Groarke and hosted Studio East Dining, a 3-week pop-up restaurant by Bistrotheque. The launch event itself was attended by a host of East London designers, artists and journalists in the first fully functioning rooftop restaurant ever held in the middle of a major construction site. Throughout the rest of June the restaurant was open to the paying public - not surprisingly, all tables sold out just a few weeks after going on sale. | /Download |
| May 2010 | The Westfield Stratford City and Olympic sites are a hive of activity, with construction work on the Olympic park and Athletes Village beginning to peak. A combined workforce of over 15,000 people are employed across the three projects, and management of the different sites and access routes is carefully coordinated between Westfield and the Olympic Delivery Authority; with 70% of Olympic park spectators due to arrive via Westfield Stratford City, we play an important role in making the 2012 Games happen. | /Download |
| April 2010 | To the bottom of this image is the Combined Cooling and Heating Plant (CCHP) which is now nearing completion. This huge and complex piece of technology will supply most of the heating and cooling needs for Westfield Stratford City and will work in tandem with another CCHP located on the Olympic Park. Inclusion of the CCHP is the single most important step that Westfield is taking in our ambition to set new standards for environmental sustainability in retail development. | /Download |
| March 2010 | With an agreement now reached with the UK's largest hotel company, Whitbread, a new addition to the project is about to begin construction. A 267-bedroom hotel will sit in a prime location, directly between John Lewis and Stratford International Station and is planned to be open for guests in time for the Olympics. Elsewhere on site the final layer of cladding on the main centre begins to be installed. | /Download |
| February 2010 | The first roads are starting to be constructed now, and not a moment too soon as the continued poor weather has made things pretty muddy on site. At our exits we have cleaning equipment which all vehicles must drive through before leaving, ensuring that we don't carry mud out onto public highways. Inside the buildings, blockwork and plasterboard begin to mark out the service corridors that will run behind the 300 retail units. These corridors will eventually be hidden from the public, but are vital to the retailers to bring new stock into their stores and take waste away for recycling. | /Download |
| January 2010 | The terrible weather means it's a slower start on site to 2010 than we might have liked, but things are soon back on track. With many of the buildings nearing structural completion, work begins to focus on 'fit out'. Steel and concrete contractors will soon be leaving the site, and more and more mechnical and engineering contractors are arriving. The glazed mall roof, which arcs gracefully from John Lewis to Marks & Spencer, is half complete now, making the main mall, well on its way to being watertight, a critical next step for the project. | /Download |
| December 2009 | Christmas comes round once more and the site begins to prepare to shut down for a week and a half. This year there is little activity happening during the break, so most of the workforce gets a much deserved holiday. We are now averaging 1,500 workers per day, a figure which we expect to double by summer 2010. | /Download |
| November 2009 | Work begins in Meridian Square, signalled by the installation of new hoardings. The hoardings themselves will be used to provide regular progress updates to the community, but also will be used as exhibition space for local art projects. The first, "The Story of Stratford", exhibits a fantastic display of artwork produced by professional artist Helen Marshall, while working with local schools. The two year project is sponsored by Westfield. Behind the hoardings construction work begins on the steps, lifts and escalators which will connect the Stratford town centre to the the link bridge above. When completed late in 2010 this structure will form the main pedestrian route between today's town centre and Westfield Stratford City. | /Download |
| October 2009 | This month we officially handed over a recruitment and training centre to the London Borough of Newham's 'Workplace' team, in an event attended by Newham's Mayor, Sir Robin Wales. Local residents looking to find work on the construction site can use the centre to meet employers, attend training courses and experience 'taster' sessions. 500 local people have already found work at Westfield Stratford City to date, and the centre will aim to build on that fantastic achievement. | /Download |
| September 2009 | Cladding and glazing of the buildings continues apace, with the Marks and Spencer and John Lewis stores largely completed. The main retail centre also now has it's 'skin' in a number of locations and the 12 screen Vue Cinema, which sits on top of the main retail centre, is getting the same treatment. This first layer will later be embellished in some areas with additional architectural features, which we'll feature on future updates. The glazed roof of the centre, which curves gracefully from Marks and Spencer all the way to John Lewis, begins installation. | /Download |
| August 2009 | Most of the structural steelwork for the site is now in place, but there's a few buildings still to go. The only stand-alone multi-storey car park begins to take shape which will eventually provide parking for 1,500 vehicles over 9 levels and is situated next to John Lewis. Other car parking is either above the centre or underground, meaning the main shopping routes in Westfield Stratford City can be entirely pedestrianised. | /Download |
| July 2009 | The Town Centre Link, all 1,600 tonnes of it, is pushed over the railway lines into its finally position, connecting Stratford town centre with Stratford City. Believed to be the largest bridge 'push' over an active railway station ever completed in the UK, this is a major achievement for the construction team and a significant milestone for the project. The size and height of the bridge now become clear to people passing through Meridian Square each day. | /Download |
| June 2009 | Cladding is now commenced on the Marks & Spencer building. As this is the location closest to Stratford station, this will be another big change for people viewing the site from Stratford town centre. Our first 'off site' works begin at Warton Road off Stratford High Street. This project will lower the road so that buses will be able to pass under the railway bridge and on to Stratford City when we open in 2011. Later in the year improvement works will start at the Warton Road / High Street junction as this will eventually form a key route into the centre. | /Download |
| May 2009 | With our daily workforce now over 1,000, our site welfare facilities are getting busier all the time. As well as two large canteens, able to feed hundreds of workers at a time, we have a site shop, site nurse and other amenities to help look after the health and happiness of the team. Our new training and employment centre for local people is handed over to London Borough of Newham. 'Workplace' will help our contractors to recruit locally, and provide training courses for residents who are looking to get into the construction sector. | /Download |
| April 2009 | 'Cladding' on the John Lewis building is progressing well. Once the steel frame for a building is complete, panels of various materials are attached, sometimes in many layers. These panels form the walls and external look of the building. The John Lewis building is clad in a natural sandstone, and later, a granite band will be added around the building's base. Large glass panels will complete the works later this year. | /Download |
| March 2009 | Steelwork is now getting underway on some of the smaller buildings which line the 'Southern Boulevard', the High Street of Stratford City. These buildings, known as M7 and M8 will house retail units at ground floor, but are built so that eventually offices and a hotel can be constructed on top. To the rear of M7 and M8 is the 'Cherry Park' area, which will eventually become a new residential quarter with around 1,200 apartments and a landscaped park with children's play areas. | /Download |
| February 2009 | Like much of London, snow has shut us down on site for 24 hours, and much time is spent the next day clearing the site to ensure the safety for our workforce. After a day or two off for many of the on-site team, we're quickly back underway. Our Combined Cooling and Heating Plant (CCHP) takes shape. This facility provides much of the site's heating, cooling and electricity from a central point, a vastly more efficient system than traditional methods. The CCHP will drastically reduce Stratford City's carbon emissions and help us meet our strict sustainability objectives. | /Download |
| January 2009 | Over Christmas work has continued on the Town Centre Link, and work has also got underway on another key bridge link. 'Bridge 12' travels south from Stratford City, carrying over two sets of railway lines and then running parallel with Gibbins Road. The Olympic Delivery Authority will then construct a new road which will connect the bridge with Warton Road, which is currently closed. When both the bridge and road are complete, Warton Road can re-open, forming the main pre-Games road link to Stratford City. | /Download |
| December 2008 | Work continues apace right until the much deserved Christmas and New Year break for the workforce. The site is pretty much shut down over Christmas except for some of the work we are carrying out near the railway lines. This work has to be done under a 'posession', meaning the railway is shut down, and these posessions are often during weekends and bank holidays to minimise disruption. During this period the central support for the Town Centre Link is constructed in between rail lines in Stratford station. | /Download |
| November 2008 | The first sections of the Town Centre Link bridge arrive on site. This bridge will ultimately be the main connection between Stratford town centre today and Stratford City, and will also be a key route into the park during the Games. The bridge is 130 metres long, 12 metres wide and 5 metres high. Its huge size means it has to arrive at Stratford in individual sections which are then welded together by a specialist team. The bridge is being constructed on the Stratford City site and then pushed over the railway lines in 3 phases during 2009. When the final push is completed the bridge will land perfectly on supports being built next to Stratford rail station, completing the link between Stratford and Stratford City. | /Download |
| October 2008 | Up to 1,000 tonnes of steel are now being erected per week as the main mall begins to take shape. The first phase of the Marks & Spencer store's steelwork is now in place, an impressive sight from the platforms of Stratford station. | /Download |
